What Is The Conjunctiva?

The conjunctiva is the epithelium covering different parts of the eye. The palpebral conjunctiva covers the inner surface of the eye lids. The ocular conjunctiva covers the white, outer surface of the eye.

Think of the epithelium as a lining of cells that perform different functions. The conjunctiva is an epithelium that functions as a mucous membrane, so it secretes mucous to lubricate and protect the eye. The mucous acts as a barrier, preventing foreign particles from entering the eye. However, the conjunctiva itself can be the target of irritants, resulting in the different types of conjunctivitis.
